He joined company D, 164th Infantry in February of 1941. He was assigned as a Second machine gunner. After training at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, he was shipped by rail to San Francisco for deployment overseas to Melbourne, Australia. He landed on the shores of Guadalcanal in October 1942 and became part of the first army unit to take offensive against the Japanese. He was also at the Fiji Islands and Bougainville part of Papua, New Guinea. Discharged in 1945.
