He enlisted in the Army on 5 February 1943. He served in the European Theater of Operations and fought in numerous battles, including the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy Invasion. He was injured in combat in Germany. He received a purple heart, three bronze stars, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, and a WWII Victory Medal.
