developed his skills as an amateur radio operator. Those skills served him well when upon enlisting for Army service in 1943 he was assigned to train radio technicians and later sent to Chabua in the northeastern Indian state of Assam. There, his unit operated part of a high-frequency radio network that linked Calcutta to Kunming in support of air transport operations over the Himalayan 'Hump' and the Kuomintang in China.
