He enlisted in the U.S. Army on 18 February 1943. He was on the bomber Boeing B-29 Ramblin Rose from the 500th Air Group. On a mission, two engines were knocked out and the landing gear was damaged. On landing the bomber crashed and collided with a truck. He got out of the crash okay.
