He joined the U.S. Navy through the V-7 Program and attended Midshipman School at Columbia University and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval reserve in June 1944. He transferred to the regular Navy as an engineering officer and later headed the Physics Department at the U.S. Naval Preparatory School (NAPS).
