He served on the USS Henrico in WWII, and was a landing craft boat group commander at Omaha Beach at D-Day. He was also on the Henrico in the Pacific Theater of Operations when she was struck by a Kamikaze in the bridge. He lost his best friend in the Kamikaze attack.
