He enlisted in the Air Force in August 1942. He served in the Pacific area as a mechanic and crew chief on C-47 and C-54 planes. He was in the Admiralty Islands New Guinea, Leyte and Manila in the Philippine Islands, Australia and Japan. He went to Tokyo, Japan right after the atomic bombs were dropped.
