He served as a Sergeant in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 397th Infantry Regiment, Third Battalion Headquarters, in the European Theater of Operations. Killed in Action, December 5, 1944, Baccarat, France, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in action near Bertrichamps, France.
