He was sworn into the United States Naval Service on 9 February 1940 and was assigned to Naval aviation and became a chief radioman. He was at Pearl Harbor at the bombing and survived. He later served in the Pacific and in the Philippine Islands for a time. He was discharged at Fort Sam Houston on 11 February 1946, and returned to his hometown of Laredo.
