Member of the 109th Engineers of the South Dakota National Guard. Sent to Northern Ireland as part of 34th Division. Was member of 1st Ranger Battalion, E Company. Later transferred to 3rd Ranger F Company and was made Commander after receiving battlefield commission from Sergeant Major to 2nd Lieutenant. Saw combat in North Africa, Sicily and at Anzio. Later captured and sent to Prisoner of war camp in Poland; escaped and reached American lines on April 21, 1945.
