Activity During WWII

Awarded his wings on January 6, 1943 and received training in the Consolidated B-24 Liberator. Given a nine-man crew and assigned to the 409th Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group, 20th Combat Wing, Eight Air Force at Hardwick Air Base, England. During their first 10 combat missions, their plane was shot up so badly the crew re-named it 'Patches'. The crew received a new B-24 and flew their next 18 missions. He and his crew flew 28 combat missions: One to Norway, nine to France, and eighteen to the German cities of Bernberg, Brandenburg, Bremen, Brunswick, Friedrichshafen, Gablingen, Gotha, Hamm, Handoff, Mannheim, Nuremberg, Solingen, Totow, Wilhelmshaven and four to Berlin. Upon completing his 28 missions he served in the 2nd Division Headquarters Operation, 8th Air Force, Norwich, England. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal.
