Enlisted on 14 April 1942 at Fort Jay, New York serving with the 45th General Hospital as a light truck driver and hospital orderly until his discharge on 12 August 1944. During that period he saw action in North Africa and Italy. During his service he received the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with one bronze star and the Good Conduct Medal.
