He served in the European Theater of Operations in 1945. He was assigned to K Company, 3rd Battalion, 276th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division. He was Wounded in action on 17 February 1945, during his first combat action as his division began the battle on Forbach, France. He recovered from his wounds a month later, and rejoined his unit as they drove into Germany to end the war.
