Served as commanding officer of K Company, 110th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in defense of Hosingen, Luxembourg just before the Battle of the Bulge. Taken POW by the Germans after surrender of Hosingen on December 18, 1944; imprisoned at Oflag 13B at Hammelburg, Germany until March 29, 1945. While being marched by his captors southeastwards along with other prisoners of war near Nuremberg, Germany on April 5, 1945, he was caught in a high altitude American air raid (friendly fire). Along with 29 other prisoners of war, he was killed instantly as the bombs fell to the earth and exploded.
