Rank: Sergeant. He was inducted into the United States Marine Corps June 21, 1940 at Detroit, Michigan. His boot camp training took place the Fourth Recruit Battalion Training Regiment; Marine Corps Base at Parris Island, South Carolina. Later he completed his Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Served with the First Marine ‘the Old Breed’ Division in the Western Pacific Theater of Operations, assigned to Charlie Company, an element of the Sixth Amphibious Tractor Battalion and Fifth Marine Regiment. His division participated in the amphibious assault on the Island of Peleliu (Battle Dates: September 15-November 25, 1944), Code Name: Operation Stalemate II. Killed in action Saturday, September 16, 1944 during combat operations against the Japanese forces, and buried in the U. S. Armed Forces battlefield cemetery on Peleliu. After the cessation of hostilities with Japan, the family of this Marine received his remains for burial, with interment at the Riverside Cemetery in Alma, Michigan. This American Patriot was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously, for his ultimate sacrifice in defense of his country.
