Activity During WWII

After failing a military physical due to a leg injury suffered as a boy, he volunteered for the Seabees November 2, 1942. He was inducted as a Seaman First Class, and assigned to the Naval Construction Training Center at Williamsburg, Virginia on December 12, 1942. This training provided him the carpenter skills used, not just during the war effort, but the remainder of his life. On January 8, 1943 he joined the 49th Naval Construction Battalion as a Carpenter’s Mate Third Class and was shipped to Bermuda where he provided service on construction of port facilities. He returned to the USA at the Naval Construction Training Center at Davisville, Rhode Island on April 17, 1944. Following the training, he became a member of the Construction Battalion Mobile Unit 616 on September 19, 1944 as a Carpenter’s Mate Second Class. On March 15, 1945, he embarked for foreign duty to the Mariana Islands at Marpi, Saipan. While in Saipan, he provided construction service on living, port, and airfield facilities. He was authorized to wear the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon September 17, 1945. On September 23, 1945, while still in Saipan, he was transferred to the nearest receiving Ship or Station within the continental limits of the United States for further transfer to a Separation Activity for discharge by reason of expiration of Enlistment. He was received at the Pearl Harbor Staging center on November 8, 1945, and at the Personnel Separation Center, Memphis, Tennessee on November 19, 1945. He received his Honorable Discharge on December 2, 1945, having served three years and one month.
