He served as a Private first Class in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 397th Infantry Regiment, Medical Detachment, in the European Theater of Operations. Killed in Action April 13, 1945, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He also was awarded the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in action near Heilbronn, Germany.
