He served as a Private First Class in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 397th Infantry Regiment, Second Battalion, Company G, in the European Theater of Operations. Killed in Action on April 7, 1945 by a sniper near Heilbron, Germany, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He also was awarded the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry.
