He was in squadron VPB-34, a part of the "Black Cats." His squadron left for a night search on July 23, 1944, and failed to return after attacking a target in Kaoe Bay, Northern Halmaheras. He was reported missing in action the following day and was officially declared dead February 4, 1946.
