Wounded at Liege, Belgium in action in the month prior to the Battle of the Bulge. He subsequently received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and a Battlefield commission. After recuperation in London, he requested a return to action. He was was among the few U.S. soldiers present when elements of the American and Russian Armies met at the Elb river.
