He reentered active federal service November 25, 1940 as lieutenant colonel with the 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division. He participated in the landing at Salerno Beach in September 1943. He received the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action on September 13, 1943. He left active service in 1946 as a colonel and was appointed assistant division commander of the 36th Infantry Division.
