Activity During WWII

Seaman First Class; Following boot training at Naval Training Center-Great Lakes, Chicago, he was assigned aboard the Battleship USS New Jersey BB-62, with duty throughout the South Pacific Theater of Operations. As flagship of the Fifth Fleet, Task Force Group 58.2. saw action during Operation Hailstone in the Marshall Islands. Next, with the bombardment of Mille and the transfer of flags to the Cruiser USS Indianapolis CA-35, for the invasion of New Guinea, Saipan, and the Mariana Islands 'Turkey Shoot'. As flagship for Admiral Halsey's Third Fleet saw action at Manila, Leyte, Luzon and Formosa. Following repairs due to the Typhoon Cobra, joined Battle Division Seven for assaults on Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and raids on Tokyo Bay. Finally, as part of Operation Magic Carpet, returned with one thousand troops to San Francisco and separation from the service.
