He served as a Staff Sergeant in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 398th Infantry Regiment, First Battalion, Company C, in the European Theater of Operations. Killed in Action on April 7, 1945 near Oedheim, Germany, he was awarded the Purple Heart, Distinguished Service Cross, and Bronze Star Medal.
