He served as a Private First Class in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 397th Infantry Regiment, Second Battalion, Company G, in the European Theater of Operations. Killed in Action on December 14, 1945, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in action near Heilbronn, Germany.
