Trained first to fly B-17 bombers in South Carolina. As the war turned in favor of the Allies, he was moved to Texas to train on the B-29. He was preparing to leave for Tinian for mainland invasion of Japan. As he was leaving for Tinian, the atomic bomb was dropped. He was sent back to Texas.
