Commanding General, First Air Force, died December 12, 1941, when his B-18 crashed in the Sierra Nevadas en route to Hawaii. He had been chosen by the War Department to lead an investigation into pre-attack military readiness at Pearl Harbor. Received the Distinguished Service Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
