In 1944 she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and was assigned to General Patton’s 3rd Army Group where she was a charge nurse in various tented evacuation hospitals in Belgium and France. Promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant and was a member of the U.S. Army garrison in Reims, France on May 7, 1945 when Germany surrendered to the Allies. Awarded two Battle Star medals for her service.
