Joined the 9th Air Force as a pilot of a B-26 Marauder nicknamed 'Tobacco Road'. Flew 65 bombing missions over Holland, Belgium, and France. Not a member of his crew was ever wounded, even when five German fighters attacked his plane over Rouen, France. He became an operations officer, plotting bombing runs for other pilots. Received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with nine oak-leaf clusters.
