Enlisted in the Army on February 10, 1943 at age 20. One year later, he was captured by Nazi Germany while serving in Italy, and was sent to Stalag 7A near Moosburg, Germany where 8,209 other American POWs were held. His capture was first reported to the International Committee of the Red Cross on October 8, 1944.
