1942 Supervising Engineer, Panama Canal; 1942-1943 Assistant Chief of Staff (G-4), U.S. Army Forces in the Middle East; 1943 Chief of Staff, U.S. European Theater of Operations to Lieutenant General Frank Maxwell Andrews. He was killed aboard a B-24D Liberator that crashed on Mt. Fagradalsfjall in Iceland. The plane and crew were headed back to the U.S. To tour the country and help sell war bonds. Received the Army Distinguished Service Medal, American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal.
