Served in the Field Artillery and was an Aide to Lieutenant General Frank Maxwell Andrews. He was a passenger on a B-24 Liberator flying from Royal Air Force Base Bovingdon, England to Washington, D.C. The plane crashed into Mt. Fagradalsfjall in Iceland.
