Commanded the 164th Infantry Regiment on Guadalcanal. He later fought with the 104th Infantry Division as the assistant division commander. He then commanded the 8th Infantry Division in Europe. Under his command, the division liberated the Neuengamme concentration camp. In 1945 he commanded the 88th Infantry Division in Austria. Received Army Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, and Bronze Star.
