In November 1941 he was placed in command of the Second Marine Division. He then assumed command of the Defense Force, Samoan Group. In May 1944, he assumed command of the San Diego Area, and later to his last command at the Marine Training and Replacement Command. Received Legion of Merit with 'V', Navy and Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation with one star, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal with one service star, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and WWII Victory Medal.
