Activity During WWII

A naval aviator appointed a Chief of U.S. Aviation Mission to Peru. while there the Peruvian president appointed him to the commanding general of the Peruvian Air Force. After his return to the U.S., he was appointed commanding general of the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing deployed at Hawaii. In April 1943, he was appointed deputy commander of 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, where he was the immediate superior of Pappy Boyington, who commanded the 'Black Sheep' of VMF-214. During the Bismarck-Archipelago Campaign, he successfully neutralized enemy air power in the region. His last command was commanding general of aircraft, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. Received Army Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal with two stars, American Defense Service Medal with Foreign Service Clasp, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three service stars, WWII Victory Medal, Commander of the La Orden El Sol del Peru, and Peruvian Aviation Cross, 1st Class.
