Served as chief of staff and deputy commander of I Marine Amphibious Corps during the Treasury Islands occupation and as assistant commander of the 3rd Marine Division during the planning and execution of the recapture of Guam. In 1944, he served as commanding general of the Marine Training Command at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, until January 1946. Received the Legion of Merit with one star and Combat 'V', Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, American Defense Service Medal with Base Clasp, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 service stars, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Legion of Honour (France).
