He was a naval aviator who served as chief of staff when he assumed command of Marine Aircraft Group 12 and led his unit during the air operations during the Emirau campaign and in the Solomon Islands. He then served on the staff of commanding general of Aircraft within Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. Received Legion of Merit with Combat 'V', American Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal with Base Clasp, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two 3/16" service stars, and Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal.
