Fought in the Battle Guadalcanal, Battle of Tenaru, Battle of Cape Gloucester, and Battle of Iwo Jima. Received the Navy Cross, Navy Presidential Unit Citation with three stars, Legion of Merit with Combat "V", Bronze Star with Combat "V", American Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four stars, and Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal with one star.
