Activity During WWII

Served as commander of the 9th Marines landing at the Bougainville Campaign, Guadalcanal, Recapture of Guam, and Marianas Islands. He was ordered to the V Amphibious Corps, where he became Corps Operations Officer, in which capacity he planned and participated in the landing and assault on Iwo Jima. Received the Bronze Star Medal with 'V' Device, Legion of Merit with 'V' Device, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with silver campaign star, American Defense Service Medal with Fleet Clasp, WWII Victory Medal, and Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal with award star.
