Commanding officer of USS Enterprise and led Enterprise into combat in the Guadalcanal campaign supporting the United States Marine Corps amphibious landings. Fought in the Battle of the Eastern Solomon Islands. He then served in the Atlantic Fleet. In 1944, he served as chief of staff of the United States Fifth Fleet and operated in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns. Received the Navy Cross, Presidential Unit Citation, Distinguished Service Medal with Gold Star, and Legion of Merit with Gold Star and Oak Leaf Cluster.
