In 1944, he became commander of USS San Francisco (CA-38) and participated in the Battle of Kwajalein, Mariana Islands Turkey Shoot, and Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign. Received Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze stars, and Philippine Liberation Medal with two stars.
