Appointed commanding officer of the 4th Marine Regiment (China Marines) stationed in Shanghai, China, to protect American citizens and property in the Shanghai International Settlement. He was then transferred to the Southern Pacific theatre to participate in the Allied advance to the Central Solomon Islands. In 1944, he was appointed Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps. Received Navy Commendation Medal, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, China Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two service stars, Chine Order of the Cloud and Banner, 2nd Class, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and American Service Defense with base clasp.
