He was a Technical Sergeant in the 118th General Hospital in New South Wales, Australia and at the Field Hospital in the Fiji Islands. He enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor bombings and served during the entire war performing first as an ambulance driver and then as a lab technician. He saw Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt once when she visited the New South Wales hospital. He received the Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal for his service in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations and a Good Conduct Medal.
