At the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he was stationed at the Marine barracks at Pearl Harbor Navy Yard, Hawaii, as commanding officer of the 2nd Engineer Battalion. He participated in the defense of the island and later in salvage operations. Served as commanding officer of 8th Marine Regiment and participated in the Battle of Guadalcanal and Battle of Tarawa. Received the Legion of Merit with Combat 'V', Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two service stars, and American Service Defense Medal with Base Clasp.
