Assumed command of the 24th Marine Regiment and led them in the attack on Roi-Namur, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands and then the assault on Saipan and Tinian and the Mariana Islands. Appointed a brigadier general and served as assistant division commander of the 4th Marine Division, and in this capacity participated in Battle of Iwo Jima. Received Navy Cross, Legion of Merit with Combat 'V', Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four service stars, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one service star, Bronze Star with Combat 'V', Navy Presidential Unit Citation with one Service star, and Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal with two service stars.
