He served with the Army Signal Corps 1st Aircraft Warning Company, Philippine Islands. After the Philippine surrender in May 1942, He was imprisoned by the Japanese. As a Prisoner of War he endured three and a half years of imprisonment beginning with the Bataan Death March. After surviving 30 days on the Tottori Maru Hell Ship, he was forced to work at the following camps: Cabanatuan Camp #3, Hoten Prisoner of War Camp in Manchuria,and Mukden Prisoner of War Camp. He was liberated by Russian and other Allied Soldiers in August 1945.
