He was a member of the 1st Marine Raider Battalion. Their first encounter was at the Battle of Tulagi. Was appointed commander of rifle company and participated in Battle of Guadalcanal, Battle of Edson's Ridge, and Actions along the Mantanikau river. Received the Legion of Merit with Combat 'V' and Silver Star for his gallantry in action for New Georgia Campaign. Also received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three 3/16" service stars.
