He participated in the initial attack on the Gilbert and Marshall Islands and his destroyers served as an escort for the aircraft carrier Hornet from which Lt. General James Doolittle launched the first bombing raid on Tokyo. Participated in shore bombardment of Wake Island. Served with Amphibious Force Atlantic Fleet, taking part in the invasions of Sicily and Italy. Transferred to the Pacific, and participated in the landings on Kwajalein, Wake, and Marcus Islands and then Guam and the Lingayen Gulf.
