Served with 3rd Marine Division and was ordered to combat in the Bougainville Campaign. Transferred to 21st Marine Regiment, where he was appointed executive officer. The unit sailed to recapture Guam. He was decorated with the Bronze Star with Combat 'V'. Appointed commander of 2nd Battalion, 21st Marines and was ordered to Iwo Jima where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart and Legion of Merit with Combat 'V' as well as Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four 3/16" service stars.
