He assumed command of the Marine detachment aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise and participated in the transportation of Marine Fighter Squadron 211 to Wake Island at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The Enterprise took part in the Marshall-Gilberts and Wake Islands raids and the Marcus Island raid and Battle of Midway. He left the Enterprise, and assumed executive officer with 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines and sailed for Bougainville, Solomon Islands. He then participated in the Recapture of Guam. In 1945, the 3rd Marine Division took part in the capture of Iwo Jima. Received Legion of Merit with Combat 'V', Bronze Star Medal with Combat 'V' and 5/16" Gold Star, Navy Presidential Unit Citation with two stars, American Defense Service Medal with 'A' device, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one silver 3/16" service star, American Campaign Medal, and WWII Victory Medal.
