Graduated from flight school in 1943, designated a Liaison Pilot. He was then assigned to the 191st Field Artillery Battalion. In 1944, the 191st was ordered to England and then to France. He was wounded when his aircraft was shot down by German fighter aircraft while flying a reconnaissance mission in support of the 4th Armored Division. He was flying over Normandy shortly after D-Day and was found by French partisans and was evacuated to England where he had surgery, recovered and returned to the 191st in late December.1944. He served six months of occupation duty in Germany. Received Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, Air Medal with Combat 'V' and 45 Oak Leaf Clusters, and Master U.S. Army Aviation Wings.
